The Book of Common Prayer

In our Sunday worship, we follow the order of service in the Book of Common Prayer, a treasure chest full of devotional and teaching resources for individuals and congregations, containing our liturgies, our prayers, our theological documents, and much, much more. The primary symbol of our unity with Episcopal and Anglican churches worldwide, the American Book of Common Prayer is a revised edition of the English Book of Common Prayer of 1662. There are many verbal changes, some omissions, and a few additions, but in all other respects the American is an exact reproduction of the English book. The American Book of Common Prayer, most recently revised in 1979, is the red book found in the back of the pew, usually along with the Episcopal Church Hymnal (revised in 1982), other song books, and often a bible as well.

The Book of Common Prayer has a rich history, here and in England. To delve deeper into it, visit justus.anglican.org
