Four years ago, Bishop Tom Wright preached from Palm Sunday through Easter Day at a parish in his diocese, a parish that was the scene for "Billy Elliot," a parish that had known pain and trouble. Of the many significant points made by the bishop, I believe the most important was the following: "I am convinced that when we bring our griefs and sorrows within the story of God's own grief and sorrow, and allow them to be held there, God is able to bring healing to us and new possibilities to our lives. That is, of course, what Good Friday and Easter are all about." I am certain that Bishop Wright is correct and I believe that if we engage Holy Week in this manner, then individuals and this parish will flourish as each lives out the testimony of John in Revelations: "Behold, I make all things new."

For this reason, I ask you to commit yourselves to a discipline this Holy Week.

Come to Christ Church each night, participate in the Eucharist; listen to the teaching; and on Good Friday bring all your agonies and troubles to the foot of the cross and give them to the Lord of all. I do not know what our Lord will do with what is brought to him, but I do know that he will do something.
